Falcon Trail & Farish Recreation Area

Arrowhead developed and implemented a Trails Master Plan for the Falcon Trail on the Academy campus and for the Farish Recreation Area. In Spring 2012 we returned to assess the whole loop with GPS data collectors and GIS, delivering a detailed spreadsheet, correlating maps and geo-referenced field photos, then carried out the repairs with machines and hand tools.

IMBA-standard trail for Wyoming’s first mountain-biking trail-based state park — Slabz, Crow Creek, Mo’ Rocka, Granite Ridge, Shoreline, Stone Temple Circuit, Pinball, Sammie’s Slide and Foxtail — with bridge construction, technical trail features, a pump track and jumps.

11+ miles rebuilt over two seasons

Widened and out-sloped tread, blasted and removed boulders, widened switchback turns and built substantial grade dips for safety and erosion control. Two prefabricated cattle guards were installed to enforce the 50-inch maximum OHV width restriction. Supported by the Recreational Trails Program and Great Outdoors Colorado’s lottery grant program.

Little Rainbow Trail

Salida Mountain Trails, with Southwest Conservation Corps & the BLM Salida District

5 miles · 48″ tread

Chaffee County’s first machine-built trail, cut with a SWECO 480 mini trail dozer and mini-excavators. The combined efforts of the Southwest Conservation Corps, Salida Mountain Trails and Arrowhead finished the trail in under six weeks. Designed primarily for beginning mountain bikers, hikers and equestrians — a mile from our own front door.

Talon Trail, Blackmer Loop, Acorn Alley, Sundance, Little Bear, Bobcat Way, Soaring Kestral, Raccoon Ridge, Turkey Trot, Boulder Run and Coyote Run — a full trail system designed and constructed for a brand-new state park.

Mosier Gulch Trail Extension

4.5 miles

A feasibility determination followed by the design of roughly four and a half miles of singletrack extending westward from Mosier Gulch onto Forest Service land. Designed in the summer of 2010 and constructed in the summer of 2011.

Lincoln Mountain Open Space

6.5-mile system, built 2012

A machine-built, non-motorized trail system on the former Palmer Divide Ranch: a 3.25-mile loop, a 2.75-mile out-and-back lollypop and connector trails, open to hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers. The crew began in July 2012.

Morrison Natural History Museum Interpretive Trail

A surfaced interpretive trail with five interpretive stations, connecting the museum to the Mt. Falcon Open Space trailhead parking lot. Built wide and firm enough for everyone the museum hosts, from elementary school groups to seniors.

Wildcat Mountain Trail, Waterin’ Hole Loop, Ponderosa Loop and Rocky Gulch Trail — seven miles completed in 2007 — followed by six more miles of Backcountry Trails in 2009.

Rainbow Trail Reconstruction

Reconstruction of portions of the Rainbow Trail beginning at the South Colony Trailhead and working north. Arrowhead provided the machine portion of the reconstruction while San Carlos Ranger District crews handled preliminary corridor clearing and finish handwork.

Just under a mile and a half of new singletrack built in the spring of 2011, benched through juniper and yucca and edged with native rock.

Beetle-kill clear-cut logging had buried the original hand-built loop under slash. Arrowhead was brought back to re-construct the system as a machine-built trail, with views out to the Indian Peaks.

Private Mountain Trail

A hybrid machine-and-hand build up side slopes running from 20% to 75%. Machines worked until the side slope hovered around 65%, then the crew finished the climb by hand over three seasons of four-to-six week stints.

Salida Pump Tracks

Beginner, intermediate & advanced loops

The town track opened in the summer of 2010 with three loops. Arrowhead has since built several more around Salida, including an intermediate backyard track over an eighth of a mile long with two 180-degree berms, seven 90-degree berms, five half-berms and more than forty rollers.
